Short-term insurance fraud line
How to report suspected incidents of fraud or misconduct anonymously
The South African Insurance Crime Bureau (SAICB), formed in 2008 to address syndicated crime and fraud in the short term insurance industry, manages the Insurance Fraudline on behalf of the insurance industry.
Reports received via the Fraudline mainly cover short term insurance information but calls on Life insurance, Brokers and Service Providers are also received.
What happens if you report suspected insurance fraud to the Fraudline?
The Fraudline allows the general public, staff or anyone who wants to report suspected fraudulent behaviour to interact with the industry by phoning into an independent call centre, sending a fax or e-mail or logging on the fraudline website and submitting a query, complaint or fraud report.
The call centre operator will explain the 3 levels of anonymity in detail to the caller to guarantee that only the information the caller wants to share is forwarded to the SAICB.
A series of questions, designed to extract all the relevant information from the caller, is then asked by the call centre operator to ensure that as comprehensive a report as possible is sent to the SAICB.
A report is then drawn up to incorporate all relevant information and remove any information on the caller, if requested, and sent to the SAICB for follow up.
If the Insurance company is known the report is sent directly to the insurer for follow up. If the identity of the insurer is not known, the report is sent to the whole industry for review and action.
If follow up is requested by the caller, then the SAICB will keep the caller informed on the progress of the investigation.
The Insurance Fraudline is managed by Deloitte to ensure the anonymity of the caller, and callers can use any one of the following methods to report suspected insurance fraud/crime.
